Walking The Greasy Pole in the Fall Classic in Gloucester Images and Video of the Thrills and Spills

The Greasy Pole and the brave souls that walk it are a mainstay of the St. Peter's Fiesta in Gloucester and the pole itself has become a familiar landmark. When it disappeared at the end of September (the structure having collapsed into the sea) plans were formed to reconstruct it in time for next year's festival. Even though many members of the community are donating their time and even materials to help with the project funds still need to be raised for the new construction. That is how the first ever Greasy Pole fall classic was born.

The pole was brought the Gloucester High School and mounted on the football field above padding in order to have a pole walking event to raise funds. Walkers paid 25 dollars for the honor of running down a pole greased with crisco and an attempt to grab the much coveted greasy pole flag. As the images show such actions do not always end well. The walkers went in three groups and there was nearly ninety listed but not all of those were able to attend. Some walkers paid two and even three times to continue competing.

The walker that was injured was taken to Addison Gilbert Hospital by the ambulance crew that was on scene. That he was already injured before his final attempt of the day was more than a little disconcerting to some in the crowd. This event attracts some pretty rugged individuals who mightn't let the need of a few stiches stop them from competing.

I will let the images speak for themselves and offer all of the imagery in this article as a gift to the people who want them.

The winner of the first group starts his walk.

The flag is right there but many lose their balance at the last second and miss the grab.

He makes it look easy with an almost leisurely plucking of the flags.

Ouch!!

The Party may need to wait a while after this.

It's a little slippery....

That has to be an inch of crisco on those feet.

Hey it's the Gloucester Fisherman.

This was one of the biggest wipe outs of the day. (An honor in itself)

I believe a face plant in the early round caused the profuse bleeding but falling off of the upper padding onto the ground was what made a trip to the hospital necessary. No word on how he is doing but he gave two thumbs up on his way to the ambulance.

Three winners from the Gloucester Greasy Pole Fall Classic. A fund raising event to rebuild the ocean platform that mounts the greasy pole. A Gloucester landmark that fell into the sea in September.

This video quickly displays over 850 action images and two quick videos of the action at the Gloucester Greasy Pole Fall fund raiser.

The St. Peter's Fiesta Commitee has established a fund raising account at the Cape Anne Savings bank for the project to rebuild the Greasy Pole. Donations (With "Rebuild Greasy Pole Fund" written on them) can be sent to the Cape Anne Savings Bank, PO box 330 Gloucester Mass 01930.

I just had knee surgery in June and have finally gotten used to not being in pain. Maybe in the future I could do something crazy like this but for right now I am pretty happy behind the camera.

The costumes are priceless and usually falling off of the pole involves quite a drop into the ocean.

The bloody faced guy went back for more! Looks a bit serious with not just the nose, but I think I see a cut above the eye, maybe? Too bad the other one went to the hospital. Walking a greased pole and expecting not to fall off..? Oh, that's too easy, couldn't they think of something challenging?! :P

Everyone that walks it falls off of the pole. Some wipe it off pretty good on their way down making it possible for the next person to go that little bit farther. (:

jj, that was really cool.

A true Gloucester Tradition the documentary.

GLOUCESTER, Mass., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Gloucester, Mass., city officials say they plan to reconstruct the Greasy Pole, a city trademark that was washed away by high tides.

The pole, first erected in 1931 as part of Gloucester's annual St. Peter's Fiesta, and its 12-foot wooden dock were swept away Sept. 29 during high tides in the city's harbor, The Boston Globe reported Saturday.

"The actual Greasy Pole structure has become an icon in the city," said Joe Novello, 61, the president of the St. Peter's Fiesta Committee. "We're going to keep this thing as part of Gloucester's tradition and history."

The city approved plans last week to reinstall the structure, a project that Novello estimates costing $85,000.

However, Novello said there has been overwhelming support from locals who say walking of the 40-foot pole covered in grease to reach a red flag at the end is a cultural custom.

Local lobstermen have offered to raffle off their largest catches to support the cause and musicians have suggested a battle of the bands to raise funds for the Greasy Pole.

"A lot of people are realizing the importance not just of the Greasy Pole but the fiesta," Novello said. "It brings a lot of fun to everybody involved and all the spectators too."

The St. Peter's Fiesta began in 1927 when Italian Americans in the fishing community installed a statue of St. Peter, the patron saint of fishing, in Gloucester's town square.

"We're hoping the platform is rebuilt by Thanksgiving," Novello told the Globe. "Hopefully the new walking pole will be built by spring or fiesta."

Thank you for the historical and news aspect of the story BH. By the time I got done with the images I didn't do any of the links or stuff to go with the artical that I should have. Full coverage of the event should be available at Good Morning Gloucester today. I haven't been over there yet. I should probably seed their coverage..

Cool event. I'd be cautious about posting it on the vine. The next thing you know the liberals will want laws passed requiring the competitors to wear full faced helmets and padded suits.

If the event always happened at the High School I am sure there would be all kind of insurances and stuff required. The fact that it usually happens offshore (on the ocean) prevents a lot of regulatory activity at the local level.

At fiesta the beaches are packed with spectators and there are a bunch of boats around the platform full of people. Friday is for new participants. Saturday is for guys that have won on Friday and Sunday is the Walk of Champions.

The costumes are always hilarious.

Now that I have read the rules of these games they don't allow you to bring a camera capable of taking a cool picture. My little point and shoot wouldn't be of much use at a hockey game (I need a better one for times like these. ):

GH- I think at the fund raiser anyone could walk the greasy pole. Women tend to be more sensible when it comes to this kind of thing so none walked. During fiesta there is a tradition amongst the contestants that once you have won you will always have the right to walk but not necessarily the will. Those older winners are able to select anyone they want to walk in their place.

New entrants wait quite a while to get the chance to walk on Friday and I am not sure if any women have applied for that or not.

Hey JJ how the heck are you? Kenny from down at Pratty's had a pic of the pole that died but no one said anything about the pole fundraiser. I'm kind of sad I won't be there this year for the Greasy Pole.:( First time in years I haven't been there for fiesta. I just don't have the $ anymore to go like I use to. Did you see the video on you tube three men New England? Francis, Shaun and Davey are on there and Mary Anne and the Crows Nest. The Irish boats too, pretty neat. Mary Anne talks about the "Storm" and losing her brother Bobby on the Andrea Gail. Look it up. Say Hi to my Will's, Jack and all the boys. I'm really missing everyone.:( I want to come home!!!!!!!LOL Hi to BH too! Take care and be safe! ((((((((JJ)))))))))

(((((((((((BH)))))))))))) How the heck are you? JJ, Did you get home to your family for the holidays I hope? Are you all still in Seattle? I've sold a few paintings and have started working on the one I'm doing for your wife and you again but my studio has moved into my garage which I'm LOVING but with this cold snap I can't go in there because I heat it for the feral cats and I don't want to bother them so can't go in until it warms up enough for them to go out side a while.:( I'll get it done one of these days. I am all of a sudden obsessed with my back yard.LOL I have lived here 26 years and never used my back yard. Now I'm like a mad woman making a back yard living space which is nicer then my house.LOL I had parties almost every weekend since xmas until this crap ass winter set in. I hope it leaves soon I'm missing my fire pit I've had probably 20 years and just started using.LOL Hope all is well with both of you. Talk to you both soon! Take good care. Hugs
