Rough Water Point and Shoot (This Water Isn't Exactly Silky)

The weather was a little blustery last night. I decided the first really snotty weather of the season deserved a few pictures. When I think of a camera to bring with me in a situation where I might be up to my neck in white water my little point and shoot always comes to mind. It isn't the fanciest camera but it stores easily in raingear and is not going to cause financial difficulty if it is lost at sea. Even though they don't have a lot of control over the settings you can still get some very cool effects with a simple camera.

I love the 9 fingered, "Hi Mom," wave that my fellow crewmember did in this picture. The sea water pouring over the rail and the wall of water behind are everything a mom wants to see in a picture of junior's work.

It rained a little...

The wind blew a little too.....

Because of the lack of light my camera used a long exposure time making the silky water effects and unfortunately (due to the amount of motion that was going on) some blur in all of the subjects.

The Osprey rolls past 25 degrees offering a straight on view of the Venture's stern and the ocean.

A crewmember gets ready to pass back the end of the net. The camera needs to be cleaned at this point.

Carrying two cups of coffee while trying to get up stairs and doors to get back to the wheelhouse is very sporty in the swells but it's so worth it.

JJ Those were rough seas for sure. I don't know how you were able to get any pictures at all. Love the 'silky' water one. I can almost feel it surging. I'm glad you got through that okay and are safe.

I'm surprised the guy wasn't giving you the one finger wave.....

Soov- As soon as I got the camera out we started rolling and I wedged myself into a big winch drum to get that first picture. It wasn't weather to be getting out the fancy camera in.

I can't get all the photos to load, but the ones I see are impressive. I don't think I'd want to be out in that water.

Lebowsky- I love the Star Trek references. I am a huge fan of the original. I am still bummed out that they cancelled "Enterprise,"

The first rough ride of the season is all about tying things down.

(Lot's of duct tape and bungy cords)

Angela- I don't think that would have been a fun trip for a person that isn't used to it. Weather like that does make a good hotel with room service sound like paradise by comparison. (:

Forget the camera.

The PICS are spectacular, and a little scary to my, a "land-lubber."

Ciao,

Joanna- I am on the boat right now. We just got in from a fishing trip and are going to be doing a bunch of maintainence type of work. I have been working hard trying to get all of the big outside projects done before the snow flies in earnest. It is going to be a long cold winter and there is no reason to freeze to death doing projects that could have been done in the warm sunshine.

Fishing is a difficult world these days and we need to be doing it better than the other guys. The good news is we have been so far and are the top herring boats on the East Coast of the US again this year. It took a lot of hard work to get to the top and if we are going to stay there it will take a lot more.

Take care of yourself and I will look you up when I have more time. (:

Rough seas terrify me, as did your unusual pictures. You couldn't pay me to be out there in weather like that.

I think I drowned in another life!
