Ocean Spray on the Lighthouses (and bystanders) for Crooked Horizons {I straightened them some}

It is that time of year. Blustery fall weather is ready to become winter storms in the North East. These images taken off of Gloucester (except for the light house image from Casco Bay) show the weather that will soon be thought of as normal. The beach looks a lot different from the ocean the waves exploding on the rocks really stand out.

This light house in Casco Bay on the Maine sea coast is obviously a private one. I love the house connected to it and figure that would be the kind of light house living I would be up for.

This is the back shore of Gloucester Massachusetts. The waves running back into the sea off of the rocks was what I was going for here.

A wave explodes into spray on the back shore. In the winter some of the houses that face the sea are damaged each year from the weather.

The East Point Light House in Gloucester. Notice the people fishing on the rocks.

Look at them now.

He's ok and standing a lot higher up the rocks now for some reason.

Another fine fall day in Gloucester.

We are steaming out of Gloucester right now and I have some issues to attend to (stuffing box is leaking big time) so I just want to thank everyone that came to see my pictures and I will look you up when I get back. (:

I can almost hear the stuff banging in the cabinets.

Like that can of beans laying on its side, rolling back and forth, clunking evertime it reaches the end of its travel.

Clunk. roooolllll. Clunk.

Great pictures JJ. Those waves are really breaking high and the people fishing up on the rocks - well they need more common sense I think. I've seen the waves break over Hwy 2 in Michigan on a windy day and it's nothing to mess with.....

Wonder if the houses close to the water are Summer homes of rich people who can afford to fix them every year??Probably. That would be a nice place to live but the maintenance would be horrible.

Soov- The houses on the back shore are mostly summer homes. During the winter a lot of them are boarded up so the wind and spray doesn't break the windows and drown the place. JJ

The sea throws boulders into the yards of those homes.

Nice shots. Those waves give me goosebumps now, I'm getting wimpy in my old age.

Must be fun trying to get those shots off a bumpy deck.

ombra- Thank you.

Must be fun trying to get those shots off a bumpy deck.

I try very hard to hold still relative to what I am aiming at. If it is on the boat it is in motion with me and I can steady rest on something. If it is off of the boat I need to hold the camera as steady as I can and compensate for the roll.

Sometimes it just can't be done.

Oh, I know, I used to try and take them off my sailboat, but even under autopilot it moved when I least expected it. Now I'm away from waves, but I'm down to a little fishing boat that moves when I breathe.

ombra- I think the smaller the boat the more difficult it is to take a steady picture. I have days when I can hold almost half a second in the swells and other days where anything more than 1/40th is a complete waste of time.

Jerking rolls are the most difficult and for some reason no matter how many pictures I take the first one or two are usually my best after that I seem to lose it for some reason.

And I think Great Lake waves might even be worse because of the spacing. There is no room between waves, it's all straight up and down, one end's going up when the other is going down. Makes a sharply jerky ride.

In my old age and unsteady legs, I've retired to the smaller lakes before I fell in.

Awesome, JJ! Mahalo! Those are powerful photos! I love sitting on the lanai and watching the surf surge and rise above the rocks. I can see clear to the harbor from here which is about 7 miles away. I'm so spoiled. Stay safe on that boat as it rocks and rolls and I'll stay safe on the shore. I do want to see 15 foot waves however, I just must this winter!

js- I love the color of the sea where you live and the way the waves curl as they roar into the shore. I hope you get pictures of the big surf this year.

Thank you Angela! Our winter time fishing port is so protected that by the time you get near the shore there really isn't any big weather like Gloucester so my only chance to take pictures like these is in the fall.

Rhonda- Thank you!!

I can remember going to the beach when I was little and the waves were so big I couldn't get out to where the big kids were. I couldn't wait to go to the beach back then. If I could get a picture of how that feels I would hang it on my wall forever.
